The sound of children playing drowned out the quiet roar of the air conditioning this weekend at the Palmdale Learning Plaza auditorium.

The Get Up, Get Fit Palmdale event, planned by the more than 25 parents and leaders who participate in the Best Start Palmdale Communications Workgroup, provided many ways for children to move their bodies, from jumping rope to hula hooping, dancing to gymnastics. Get Up, Get Fit Palmdale was an effort of the Palmdale Partnership to promote exercise and fitness.

Even though the day was hot, children and their parents participated in exercise and healthy eating activities, thanks to the many local organizations and businesses who came out to share positive messages. Partners included: Antelope Valley Chess House, Children’s Bureau, Antelope Valley Partners for Health, LA Care Health Plan, Genesis Gymnastics, Girl Scouts of America, Dorothy’s Playhouse, Yes2Kids, Pastor Gary Moorhead’s Jump Rope Station and the many parent and resident volunteers who gave their time to make the day a success.

“They teach him how to roll and jump,” one parent said as she watched her son play indoors. “It breaks the shyness.”

Pastor Gary Moorehead and Best Start Palmdale partnership shared:

“We know that obesity is a problem not only in Palmdale, but in America as a whole. One of Best Start’s primary goals is to encourage children to maintain a healthy weight and to instill them with healthy eating habits. It’s the fruition of our hard work, to encourage our community to get out and get fit.”
