Los Angeles, CA (July 2, 2025) – First 5 LA is deeply dismayed by the Trump Administration’s Executive Order which undermines the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution—the provision that guarantees citizenship to all individuals born on U.S. soil. This action challenges more than a century of legal precedent and threatens the rights of countless families across the nation.

The recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling does not change the status of anyone subject to birthright citizenship, it limits the ability of states and local governments to block such federal actions through nationwide injunctions and further compounds this threat, creating a fragmented legal landscape and leaving families in many states vulnerable to the Executive Order’s enforcement.

Together, the Executive Order and the Court’s decision have generated widespread confusion and fear—particularly among mixed status families, immigrant families and birthing parents, who now face uncertainty during what should be a time of hope and celebration.

California is among a coalition of states and municipalities currently suing the federal government to block the Executive Order. First 5 LA supports all efforts to uphold the constitutional right to birthright citizenship and protect the wellbeing of children and families in Los Angeles County.
