Public Agency Applauds Mayor’s Leadership in Supporting L.A. City Youngest Children and Their Families

Los Angeles, CA (February 5, 2025) — With many child care facilities facing temporary or permanent closure because of the recent Los Angeles wildfires, First 5 LA issued the following statement in support of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass who, yesterday issued Emergency Executive Order No. 4, Return and Rebuild, which further builds upon Governor Newsom’s executive order providing more localized, rapid support for child care providers in Los Angeles to ensure the continuum of care for our youngest children.

“Thank you, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, for taking swift action to support our youngest children and their families by issuing an executive order to streamline relocation, co-location and temporary operation of child care facilities and schools in the city of Los Angeles,” said Karla Pleitéz Howell, president and CEO of First 5 LA. “Removing red tape and speeding rebuilding and recovery is essential to address the child care crisis resulting from the devastating wildfires in L.A. County.”

First 5 LA joins Mayor Bass and other leaders who are taking action on behalf of our youngest children and their families in the steadfast belief that we build and strengthen our collective resiliency when we come together in community.
