As the Senior Director of the Workplace Management TeamCarl Gayden oversees First 5 LA’s facilities operations and planning, including the Capital Improvement Project. The Workplace Management Team is part of the First 5 LA’s Center for Operational Excellence (COE) which works to review, refine and improve operational practices foundational to organizational effectiveness and Strategic Plan success. In this position, Carl will continue to oversee the project management functions within the COE, focused on business process improvements.  In addition, Carl will be the lead on efforts to ensure our significant asset—our facility—enhances our work both internally and with external partners committed to advancing our work.  Prior to First 5 LA’s 2020 organizational restructuring, Carl served as Senior Director of the Administrative Department where he managed administrative functions, including contract compliance, finance, information technology, facilities and records management. 

Carl has spent the majority of his nearly 20-year career in financial services. Carl has served as Deputy Executive Director of the San Francisco Housing Authority (SFHA) where he developed, implemented and monitored all financial, accounting, budget, strategic planning, human resources, payroll, information technology and procurement activities of SFHA. He also provided leadership for the SHFA’s accounting, audit, treasury, debt management and financial reporting functions and supervised all phases of the agency’s $220 million budget. 

Prior to joining the SFHA, Carl served as the Senior Assistant Dean for Strategy and Finance for the University of California at Davis’ Graduate School of Management where he was responsible for providing organization-wide leadership and management of strategic planning and administrative services as well as being a key advisor to the Dean and Associate Deans. Prior to his work at UC Davis, Carl served as the Associate Dean/Senior Director for Finance and Administration at the University of San Francisco’s School of Management where he was responsible for financial and administrative management and advised the Dean on strategic planning and operations. 

Prior to Carl’s work in government and higher education, he held a variety of leadership roles including the Assistant Vice President and Loan Fulfillment and Pricing Team Manager for Washington Mutual Bank, as the Secondary Marketing and Pricing Lock Desk Team Leader for Homecomings Financial, a Subsidiary of Residential Funding Corporation (GMAC-RFC) and General Motors and as an Associate and Senior Credit Analyst for Silicon Valley Bank. Carl also has served as the Co-Founder and Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Newtrendz Event Planning Corporation. 

Carl serves on the Board of Groceries for Seniors, a community based non-profit organization that provides free food to poor, elderly people in San Francisco.  

Carl earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in Finance, and later a Masters of Business Administration from the Executive MBA program from the University of San Francisco. He is married and has one son.
