Get Active With Safety
More than ever, keeping kids safe — at home, at school, with caregivers, online and anywhere else — is a top concern and priority for parents. While we can’t be with our children all the time, we can create safe environments and teach safety skills and awareness from the start. As parents, we make a real difference by actively advocating for all children in Los Angeles County to grow up in healthy, safe homes and communities.
In this Parenting Guide, we explore how to actively create safety this season and beyond, starting with a comprehensive Summer Safety checklist for families. We’re looking into multigenerational safety, offering ways for grandparents to be among the best possible caregivers. And we have ideas and information for parents to get involved in family-friendly activism and advocacy to take an important role in their children’s safety and well-being — for now and in the future.
In celebration of summer reading and National Literacy Month in September, this issue explores how children learn to read beginning at birth, along with suggestions for parents to help develop early literacy skills in children ages 0–5. As always, we offer special activities and recipes to make with children, parenting news, coupons, events and more.
From First 5 LA to your family, have a fun-filled, active — and safe — summer!
