The Power of Positive Parenting
What is positive parenting? Sometimes called positive or gentle discipline, positive parenting focuses on being honest with your kids by proactively communicating expectations of behavior; setting goals; offering praise; and avoiding shame, blame or harsh discipline, such as physical punishment. Yes, it takes work, but the rewards last a lifetime. It’s a way to build mutual respect and confidence in parents and children alike, lowering stress for the whole family.
This guide explores the core ideas of positive parenting at different ages and stages and offers tips on how to use these ideas at home. To celebrate summer, this issue looks at common myths on safe swimming with children ages 0–5. To get you started on safe swimming, we have included Los Angeles County resources for families learning to manage — and enjoy — the water.
And what would summer be without get-togethers? This guide offers how-to’s to create a fun and healthy “Rainbow Potluck” for family and friends, and ideas for summer activities and fun. Also, to celebrate Independence Day and the freedom it represents, we’re providing ways to become active advocates to improve your child’s life.
While school may be out, learning never stops! This guide offers some great summer reading ideas, parent-child activities, many ways for learning and growing — plus plenty of money-saving coupons and family-friendly events.
From First 5 LA to you and your family, here’s to plenty of sun, fun and a positive summer!
