Ask a Parent Coach: Ready for School
Q. I am concerned that my child’s pre-K isn’t doing enough to prepare her for school. What can I do to help?
A. At school, your child is probably picking up social skills such as following directions, taking turns, and getting along with others that are key to kindergarten success. At home, from birth, you can work with your child to develop important early reading, writing, and math skills that will help your child succeed. Reading aloud daily, practicing holding a crayon or pencil and drawing (even scribbling) and later, tracing/writing letters and numbers, matching rhyming sounds by making up funny poems, counting in cooking together, and playing games identifying shapes and colors are all fun ways for your child to acquire skills that will prepare for kindergarten.
