Affordable Park Programs Keep Kids Moving
On a typical afternoon, kids of all ages play basketball and flag football, and practice Pee Wee cheerleading. Some might even sign up or gather for a field trip to take a hike, watch a movie, or ice-skating around the holidays. While you might expect this beehive of youth activity to be on a school campus, its actually in an El Monte city park.
The City of El Monte Parks and Recreation Division offers lots of organized activities free of charge or very affordable for parents and families. This Best Start community shows how playing at the park is a great way for children to maintain a healthy weight. Like adults, though, kids are far more likely to participate when theres easy access.
Justino Hernandez is a recreation leader at Mountain View Park, a 10-acre space just south of the Little Five Points neighborhood. He says the organized activities at this park draw a huge turnout. When asked what he loves most about his job, Justino says, “It’s fun to play with kids!”
