The One Step Ahead Initiative is a 5-year, $30 million investment. This project provides funding over 5 years to improve health, developmental and safety outcomes for newborns in low-income communities receiving WIC services in LA County. The initiative would provide literacy and safety education and counseling along with the distribution of vouchers for age appropriate books, toys and safety items. The target population for the One Step Ahead program is WIC participants. The WIC program currently provides low income families at nutritional risk with nutrition education and food resources. One Step Ahead is designed to provide families with literacy and safety resources that they may not otherwise afford. The program is also intended to further engage WIC families by providing them with additional resources as well as to help retain families in the WIC program beyond the child's first year of life.
Total investment for 2013-14 is $2.9 million.
