Parents as Teachers and More: Finding Your Place in Social Activism

As parents — even busy, sometimes-overwhelmed parents — we can help make the change we hope to see in the world. Adapted from the Building Movement Project (BMP), a social advocacy organization (https://buildingmovement.org/), here are some roles for parents to consider in finding a place in social activism:

  • Caregiver. In the role of caregiver, you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Taking the lead on talking about race, inequity, and privilege impacts the future.
  • Frontline responder. You are on the “front line” of modeling the kind of behavior you hope to see in your children, and the kind of advocacy that will impact their future. Responding and taking action to ensure equitable health and education can effect change for your family and others.
  • Healer. Consider your role as someone who can help “heal” inequity by becoming involved in repairing old wounds through social action.
  • Storyteller. Sharing stories of your experiences is a powerful force for change.
  • Builder. Organizing and connecting with other parents on important issues builds strength and momentum.
