Good Beginnings 11: Ensuring Kids are Kindergarten-Ready

What do children need to know to be ready for kindergarten and how can parents help well before the first day of school?

This segment features preschoolers at LAUSD’s Queen Anne Place Ready for School Center in West LA. Here, moms and dads go to class too; the four-week Kindergarten Academy is designed to prepare parents and children for kindergarten success.

“Parents’ involvement in children’s education is a good predictor of academic success and early learning can take place during daily household routines,” said Nikki Dana, coordinator of Kindergarten Academy.

5 Ways Parents Can Help Get Children Kindergarten-Ready

  1. Read daily together.
  2. Teach them to say their full name and telephone number.
  3. Sing songs, do art projects, and play games.
  4. Use daily routines to teach letters, numbers, shapes and colors.
  5. Use active play to practice motor skills.
