First 5 LA Spotlight on Community: Neferteri Plessy, CEO and Founder, Singles Moms Planet

When Neferteri Plessy became a single parent a decade ago, she dreamed of a community to help women and their children find support, healing and practical guidance to navigate — and thrive — through single parenthood. As the founder and CEO of Single Moms Planet, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization, she created just that… and much more. Today, Single Moms Planet has grown to become a community of single mom business owners, leaders, entrepreneurs, as well as a resource, offering programs on financial literacy, co-parenting, divorce transition and childcare support and entrepreneurial training that reaches an international audience.

“For many women, becoming a single parent can be traumatic. With Single Moms Planet, they have a supportive, progressive community that understands and acknowledges the specific challenges that single moms and their children face. We offer sisterhood, support and a hand up,” says Plessy.

Partnering with Los Angeles corporate and civic organizations, Single Moms Planet offers annual outings — from ice skating to camping — to Los Angeles single-mom families. Throughout the year, Single Moms Planet regularly offers “Smart Money, Smart Mommy” financial literacy conferences online and in-person, specifically geared for single mothers. “Especially for single mothers, money can be a very emotional issue, and finances can cause a lot of stress. We want to help empower single moms with knowledge and tools to make decisions about money that make sense for now and to help take care of themselves and their children in the future.” For more information about Single Moms Planet, visit www.singlemomsplanet.org.
