Los Angeles, CA (May 19, 2026) – First 5 LA President and CEO, Karla Pleitéz Howell released the following statement in response to the FY26-27 California state budget May Revision released by Governor Newsom on May 14:

“The revised budget falls short of addressing the needs of our youngest learners and early educators.  California’s economic strength must be reflected in the strength of our safety net and in the well-being of the children and families who make this state thrive. At a moment when families are facing risings costs, federal uncertainty, and deep affordability pressures, California has both the responsibility and the capacity to lead with courage, partnership, and shared purpose. We can do better by ensuring our prosperity translates into a meaningful investment that protects dignity and keeps children and families healthy, housed, and nourished.

“California has an opportunity to respond to these growing pressures, and  we look forward to continued partnership with the administration and urge the Legislature and the Governor to prioritize the protection of critical supports and services for our state’s youngest children and their families as they work toward a balanced budget for all Californians.”
