Feel More Energetic!
As any sleep-deprived parent knows, getting enough rest improves your mood; decreases irritability, anxiety and depression; and helps you feel empowered to get things done. But did you know that getting enough rest is also important for cardiovascular health and healthy weight? (Yes, studies show tired people eat more!)
According to the National Sleep Foundation, more than half of adults in the U.S. experience sleep problems, and 40% report daytime sleepiness that may affect doing daily activities. Here are some ways to feel more energetic — and improve your day:
- Keep a regular bedtime schedule; try turning in a half-hour earlier.
- Eat protein and smaller meals throughout the day to keep blood sugar levels steady — and so you don’t “crash” in the afternoon.
- Recharge with a short nap during the day. Keep it to 20 minutes or less; any longer and you will feel groggy.
- Drink water. Rehydrating can increase alertness and the ability to concentrate on a task.
- Consciously rest for 10 minutes during the day at your desk. Breathe deeply and allow yourself to let your mind and body rest.
- Try to rest during the weekend, if possible. Have dinner and get the kids in bed a little earlier on Sunday night to get a good night’s sleep — and a good start to the week.
- Get moving. Taking a brisk walk when you are tired raises energy levels.
- Listen to music with a good beat, which can help you feel more focused.
- Step outside. Studies show that bright sunlight boosts brain activity and alertness.
