DIY With Kids: Grow Edible Flowers
Quick — what’s green and orange and grows like lightning? Nasturtiums! Even better, these pretty, fast-growing flowers are great for salads, with both blooms and leaves that are edible. Here is what you need to know to grow a bright bunch of blooms with kids this summer….
You will need:
A container with drainage holes OR a recycled large yogurt or other plastic container, with three holes punched in the bottom
A sunny place to put your plant, indoors or out
1.Fill your container with soil to about an inch from the rim of the planter.
2.Carefully place nasturtium seeds about an inch into the soil. Nasturtiums like lots of room to grow, so place seeds apart.
3.Place planter in the sink and water soil evenly, until it starts draining out of the bottom of the planter.
4.Once the planter has stopped draining, move your planter to a bright, sunny window or outside with direct sunlight. Nasturtiums thrive in the sun.
5.Make sure that the soil is always moist to the touch, but not soaking. A good way to check is to put your finger about two inches down into the soil every so often. (This is a good job for your child!) If it is dry, it needs water.
6.In about a week, plants will start sprouting up through the soil. Soon, rounded leaves and beautiful orange flowers appear.
7.Cut leaves and flowers and use in salads and to decorate baked goods. They are a little spicy!
