Your Health During COVID-19


“Keep calm and carry on.” Good advice, but COVID-19 and “sheltering in place” may raise anxiety to new levels for L.A. County families. Here are ideas and resources to restore calm in an anxious time for both parents and children:

  • Stretch and Move.Tension impacts muscles, which may feel tight — and increase anxiety. Roll your neck, stretching high up and side to side and doing 20 jumping jacks can help release tension — and make you feel calmer.
  • Breathe. Breathing deeply brings oxygen into your brain and muscles, and helps both relax. Breathe in for the count of five, hold it for the count of two, then breathe out for the count of seven. Focus only on your breathing and the numbers and repeat for three minutes.
  • Self-Tapping and Massage. Gently tapping or massaging your neck and upper chest releases oxytocin, the “cuddle hormone” that can help you feel more relaxed. Put on calming music and tap or massage for three minutes.

If you are in need of counseling or parenting support, Los Angeles County has many free or low cost resources — based on ability to pay — for individual, couple, family and group counseling. Here are resources for mental health and support that are accessible from home:

  • ACCESS/Hotline: The Los Angeles Department of Mental Health offers free mental health screening, assessment, referrals and crisis counseling 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Call 1-800-854-7771.
  • Well Baby Center: This non-profit parenting and counseling center offers an array of therapy and virtual parenting groups. Visit http://wellbabycenter.org/
