Advocacy for Diverse Families

To celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day this season, we celebrate the diversity of families, in all their many shapes, forms, sizes, orientations, beliefs and more. While families are all different in different ways, one thing is constant: the love of parents for their children, and the desire to do the best they can as parents. Advocating for the rights and protections of families of all kinds can empower parents to help all children get the best start.

Here are resources that provide important information, programs, assistance and more to diverse families in Los Angeles County:

  • Expectant/New Parents. The Los Angeles County Perinatal and Early Childhood Home Visitation Consortium offers resources for new and expectant parents at homevisitingla.org/resources-for-parents/
  • LGBT and Gender Diverse Families. The Los Angeles LGBT Center has programs focused on education and advocacy for LGBT and gender diverse parents, children, and youth, in the context of their families, cultures, and faith communities. Learn more at lalgbtcenter.org/leadership-advocacy/for-parents
  • Children/Families with Special Needs. Special needs encompass physical, emotional, medical, environmental, educational, and developmental needs and issues. These resources from the South LA Health Project help address a variety of special needs: slahp.org/for-special-needs-children/
