Recession Expected to Wipe out 35 years of Gains for Children’s Well-Being

  • The Child Well-Being Index (CWI) for 2009 finds that the current recession is likely to undo virtually all progress made in children’s economic well-being since 1975. The fall in economic well-being will drag down other indicators on the CWI, including children’s health, safety and community connectedness.

The CWI is published by the Foundation for Child Development annually as a comprehensive measure of how children are faring in the U.S. This year’s study tracks indicators since 1975. It finds that progress in quality of life for American children peaked in 2002, fluctuated for several years, and began to decline in 2008.
