Home Visiting Programs

Parents are at the center of First 5 LA’s work. This is because parents, including caregivers, are at the heart of a child’s development. To help all children enter kindergarten ready to succeed, parents need the skills and knowledge to support their child’s development and access to services in times of needs.

First 5 LA’s Strategic Plan 2015-2020 supports this by investing in a continuum of direct services that begins at pregnancy and continues through the child’s first five years for the purpose of strengthening families and maximizing child development. These family strengthening strategies consist of services to be provided directly to families with home visiting as a centerpiece for the provision of parent engagement, education, and support. These strategies consist of the Welcome Baby and Select Home Visiting programs.

Welcome Baby partners with local Home Visiting Programs within the 14 Best Start Communities.  Families living within a Best Start community and identified as needing more focused support are eligible for referral to a local Home Visiting program in their community. These programs are designed to assist parents in bonding with their children and supporting all aspects of their child’s development.

All new moms need help and support to raise a healthy baby, but some moms need just a little more than others. Home Visiting is intended for moms who need more focused support in caring for themselves and their newborns. Home visitors provide personalized support and information to families during home visits, including:

  • Positive parenting
  • Child health and development
  • Constructive play ideas
  • Developmental screenings
  • A resource network that links parents/caregivers to other community services.
