Baby-Friendly Hospitals

The Baby-Friendly Hospital program is designed to increase the practice and duration of breastfeeding by improving policies and staff skills at birthing hospitals. The program also seeks to promote healthy breastfeeding practices through a pathway established by Baby Friendly USA, the national representative for the international breastfeeding initiative backed by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

Who is served by this program?
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative targets pregnant women who are approaching their delivery date and who are served by participating hospitals or by a physician who is a member of a participating hospital's network.

What kinds of services are provided?
Through the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, First 5 LA is investing $10.5 million in 16 participating hospitals. Services cover staff training and the coordination of hospital policies that promote breastfeeding.

How does the Baby-Friendly Hospitals program address First 5 LA's four goal areas?

Baby-Friendly Hospitals specifically addresses the First 5 LA goal that children maintain a healthy weight. Studies show that breastfeeding improves health outcomes by reducing a child's risk for acute infections and sudden infant death syndrome, as well as chronic diseases, including diabetes and obesity. Breastfeeding also strengthens the attachment and bond between mother and child.
