Who is served by this program?
The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative targets pregnant women who are approaching their delivery date and who are served by participating hospitals or by a physician who is a member of a participating hospital's network.
What kinds of services are provided?
Through the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, First 5 LA is investing $10.5 million in 16 participating hospitals. Services cover staff training and the coordination of hospital policies that promote breastfeeding.

How does the Baby-Friendly Hospitals program address First 5 LA's four goal areas?
Baby-Friendly Hospitals specifically addresses the First 5 LA goal that children maintain a healthy weight. Studies show that breastfeeding improves health outcomes by reducing a child's risk for acute infections and sudden infant death syndrome, as well as chronic diseases, including diabetes and obesity. Breastfeeding also strengthens the attachment and bond between mother and child.
