A new component of First 5 LA's Technical Assistance Institute, the directory has been added to the online resources available for the nonprofit sector. The directory design is based on a review of best practices, and is one of the only vetted directories available. More than 30 consultants are listed in the directory and were selected through an internal and external review of materials they provided to First 5 LA.
Consultants can augment and support the work of internal staff, from organization-wide planning to specific departmental projects. But finding a good match between an organization and someone from the outside can be challenging. To assist with this process, the directory's introductory page includes links to two concise, insightful and useful articles:
- How to Choose and Work with a Consultant by Peter C. Brinkerhoff
- Nonprofit Consultants: How to Choose Them, How to Use Them by Alison Buttenheim
The key messages in both articles are that organizations need to be as clear as possible in understanding what role a consultant can take on. Staff should also be open to collaborating with the consultant in determining the most effective approach to address organizational objectives or needs, and defining realistic expectations for possible outcomes or results.
The directory is intended to be a resource for the entire nonprofit sector and, while vetted, is not an endorsement of any particular consultant. Nor are First 5 LA grantees and applicants required to use consultants from the directory for First 5 LAfunded projects.
Consultants interested in being included in the directory during future review cycles may contact Heather Tunis, program officer, at HTunis@First5LA.org.
