WIC as a Platform for the Promotion of School Readiness
The goal of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) as a platform for the promotion of school readiness, is that when children "graduate" from WIC at age five, they are prepared to enter Kindergarten.  The project will change the WIC culture to one in which school readiness activities are integrated into WIC services, and WIC individual and group education encounters include early learning topics and strategies.  Over the five years of the program, pregnant women and children ages 0-5 in SPA 3 will receive age-appropriate developmental materials and learning tools (i.e., books, crayons) and parents will be counseled on how to provide early learning activities for their children.  A Literacy Resource Specialist (LRS) at each of five WIC Centers will coordinate school readiness activities for WIC families, as libraries, child care services and Head Start.
