Mountain View School Readiness Program
The purpose of this grant is to promote the idea of school readiness by creating centers and programs that offer an array of services, including early care and education, health and social services, parenting education and support. The target population of this program is children 0-5 and their families living in the El Monte area of zip codes 91732 and 91733.  Located 13 miles east of Los Angeles, 43% of El Monte's 106,209 residents are under the age of 20. 6,143 children ages 0-4 live in the 91732 Zip Code area, and 4,597 children ages 0-4 live in the 91733 Zip Code area. Hispanics represent the largest racial/ethnic group (72%), with a growing Asian population. Just 19% of the population speaks English as its primary language. 22% of the Mountain View School District is eligible for CalWorks and 91% are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. Major program activities include eight new after school (3:15-5:15 p.m.) preschool classes, eight new pre-Kindergarten Summer Academy preschool classes, three series of parent/child workshops offered to parents and their children ages 0-5. All Mt. View SR program preschool students will receive: physicals; immunizations; and vision, dental, and hearing screenings, and a collaborative that supports parental involvement in governance and fills identified service gaps through its member agencies.
