Evie’s Desk: California Food Stamp Guide

Evelyn Martinez While many L.A. County families receive food vouchers from the supplemental nutrition program, Women, Infants and Children (WIC), they may also receive food stamps to supplement their food resources. But many eligible families may be confused about how to obtain food stamps. That is why the online California Food Stamp Guide is a useful tool.

The guide is a special project of Legal Services of California along with California Food Policy Advocates, Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County and the Western Center of Law and Poverty. Recently updated, the guide has answers to commonly asked questions such as, "Am I eligible for food stamps?" and, "How do I get an application?" It also has both federal and state food policy updates and guidelines on how to engage in a hearing process if a food stamp recipient feels that his or her benefits were cut off unfairly.

As many of us use the Internet as a primary source of information, I encourage anyone who works with families receiving food stamps to keep this information marked in your bookmarks, and also share the site with your families. Easy to remember, www.foodstampguide.org, can be an excellent resource for those relying on food aid.
