Week of the Young Child

Evelyn MartinezYesterday marked the first day of the Week of the Young Child, a holiday which lasts through April 19th. The WOYC is a nationally recognized annual event established in 1971 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. A jubilant time for many of us, this week allows the community of children's advocates to come together to help focus public attention on the needs of children and families.

Many of our readers will be celebrating by holding fairs and special events, and if you are among them, I wish you congratulations and good luck! Those of you who would like to find a way to celebrate or to learn more about issues facing children and families, I encourage you to look at our calendar and choose an event to attend; or you can read through our many Monday Morning Report articles covering various children's issues. You can also go to the LAUP Web site, which has a list of various types of events being held all over the county.

As WOYC is also a time to acknowledge the work of those who support and nurture children, I would like to say a special thanks to the First 5 LA staff, our grantees and contractors for the excellent work that you do. For many of us, the children who benefit from our long hours can't express what our work means to them. During this week I'd like all children's advocates to envision the faces of those we impact, and then envision a collective thank you from them.
