Jennifer Lopez Sets a Bad Example

Evelyn MartinezI was greatly saddened last week when I read People Magazine's article about actress Jennifer Lopez's new twins, and her decision not to breastfeed them. She was quoted saying that her mother did not breastfeed her, and she felt fine. After reading this, I realized how much more needs to be done in educating the public about the unparallel benefits of breastfeeding.

I have heard this argument before - I wasn't breastfed and look at me! The problem is that when J. Lo's mom had her, or when many of our mothers had us, we didn't have the wealth of research data now available. Scientists had not uncovered all of the incredible outcomes that a breastfed child will enjoy throughout his or her lifetime compared to their formula-fed counterparts. Unfortunately even now these scientists have to compete with infant formula companies for the attention of new mothers. Because of this, even though we know the positive benefits of breastfeeding, the reality can sometimes get drowned out by the marketing.

First 5 LA has supported efforts to uncover and spread the word about the benefits of breast milk through our WIC Datamining partnership, and has for years enjoyed a relationship with the Breastfeeding Task Force of Greater Los Angeles, which does wonderful work in educating new mothers about how and why to breastfeed. Our LA Best Babies Network also supports breastfeeding through grassroots education. They recently published a brief on breastfeeding friendly workspaces and how a new mom can appeal to their Human Resources department to adopt friendly practices. But obviously more needs to be done.

Let's all hope that those who read the People magazine article do not follow J. Lo's lead in this area. Let us also take a lesson as early childhood educators that it is our job to do more to spread the word about the benefits of breastfeeding.
