Learning to Fish, Spring 2009 Capacity Building

Evelyn Martinez Many of us are familiar with the Zen saying: "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." It is in this spirit that First 5 LA has embarked on our ambitious capacity building effort, the First 5 LA Grantee Technical Assistance Institute.

While most of our initiatives are funded for a limited time, be it one year or 10 years, this Institute is designed to help programs sustain past the life of their grant. Our special issue of the Monday Morning Report is designed to teach you — the leaders in early childhood development — about what we are doing to create robust, sustained investments in the community, and how you can join us in that effort.

This spring we will offer two new capacity building opportunities that I invite you to inquire about. See the descriptions below — to inquire about registering for these workshops or about the Institute in general contact Capacity Building Program Officer, Lee Werbel at (213) 482-7554 or lwerbel@first5la.org.

Are We There Yet? Building Sustained Impact

Available to current and former First 5 LA Grantees

Given the tremendous financial challenges affecting the nonprofit sector, many agencies have a renewed impetus to focus on long-term support of their work. This two-part workshop will help organizations prepare to assess, and create proactive strategies to address variables that can impact their financial status and organizational impact. This newest program is scheduled for May 27 and June 3.

Capacity Building Seminar Series

Available to any nonprofit agency that serves young children and their families

In the spirit of promoting resource sharing, the Capacity Building Seminars are open to any nonprofit agency that serves young children and their families. The seminars are designed to empower participants to think, plan and act strategically, particularly in these tumultuous economic times.
