Windows to our Children: Revisited – 2012

VIOLET OAKLANDER, Ph.D. An internationally known pioneer in training mental health providers on how to work psychotherapeutically with children and adolescents.

A celebration of Dr. Violet Oaklander's pioneering work in Gestalt Therapy with children and adolescents and her continued contributions to therapists working with young people in the twenty-first century.

This workshop will present an approach to working with children and adolescents that involves a variety of creative and expressive techniques with Gestalt Therapy theory, philosophy, and practice as the underlying framework and will include direct experience, case material, examples of children's work, demonstration and discussion.

In this special six hour conference, Dr. Oaklander will focus on her historically ground-breaking theory and techniques in Gestalt Therapy and how her experiences over the last forty years can be applied to both new and seasoned therapists working psychotherapeutically with children and adolescents today.

Violet Oaklander, Ph.D. is a pioneer in the teaching and training of child and adolescent psychotherapy and the author of the following books: WINDOWS TO OUR CHILDREN: A Gestalt Therapy Approach to Children and Adolescents (now in 14 languages), and HIDDEN TREASURE: A Map To The Child's Inner Self, as well as journal articles, book chapters, and audio and video tapes on psychotherapeutic work with children. Dr. Oaklander has a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, a Master of Arts in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, a Master of Science in Special Education with emotionally disturbed children, and is a certified Gestalt Therapist. She also holds a Lifetime Achievement Award from the U.S. Association of Play Therapy, and has received numerous other awards for her contribution to the mental health field.

She has traveled extensively in the United States as well as throughout the world giving training seminars on her approach to working with children and adolescents. For 27 years she conducted a highly successful two-week training program drawing people to California from all over the world, giving her last one of these in 2007. She was a regular instructor for the extension programs of the University of California campuses in Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara and San Diego, as well The Pacifica Graduate Institute for many years. Her unique approach to working with children, which combines Gestalt Therapy theory, philosophy and practice with a variety of expressive techniques, has won her national and international recognition.
