Part I of Jungian Sandplay: Symbolic Expression of the Unconscious

January 16, 2010
The Reiss-Davis Child Study Center presents Jungian Sandplay: Symbolic Expression of the Unconscious -  A series offered by a pioneer in the field of Sandplay Therapy for clinicians both new to the technique and those seeking more in-depth training.

Presenter: Harriet S. Friedman, M.A., M.F.T.  Certified teaching member of the International Society of Sandplay Therapy, founding member and former president of Sandplay Therapists of America, and faculty of the Jung Institute of Los Angeles

This two-part series teaches the basic technique of Sandplay therapy, a powerful non-verbal, expressive arts and play therapy approach that can serve as an adjunctive technique to traditional verbal therapy. The aim of sandplay is to activate healing movements at the deepest level of the personality by using miniatures and the sand tray to reflect the patient's inner (unconscious) world. By this activity and through the experience of free and creative play, unconscious processes are made visible in this three-dimensional form, much like the dream experience. Sandplay provides a vehicle for the unconscious to let itself be seen and known. Through the process of playfully creating sand trays, individuals often retrieve lost memories; work through trauma; discover unrealized aspects of the personality; and integrate parts of their personality that lead to a sense of greater balance, wholeness, and an enriched, more satisfying life.
