It Sounds So Easy but It’s Hard to Do:Relationship-Based Practice in Early Intervention

Presented by Victor J. Bernstein, Ph.D., School of Social Service Administration, University of Chicago, the purpose of this workshop is for participants to learn and apply principles for developing the best possible relationships with families and one another in order to support the development of the children receiving early intervention. This event is sponsored by: Infant Development Association of California - Southern California Chapter
Participants will learn to recognize how their stress and that of the family affects themselves and what coping strategies they can use to maintain their effectiveness and enjoyment of their work. As part of building nurturing, professional relationships, participants will learn strategies for supporting one another when stressed and coping strategies to see difficult situations from a more positive perspective. Workshop participants will be exposed to techniques for sharing their observations and asking questions non-judgmentally. In addition, workshop participants will learn the principles of how to develop nurturing, supportive relationships at every level of program operation, for example: Manager-supervisor, supervisor-home visitor, peer-to-peer, home visitor-parent, and parent-child.
At the conclusion of this training participants will be able to:
1. Describe the characteristics of positive interpersonal relationships.
2. Understand how both cultural and individual family factors affect the assessment of and intervention with the parent child relationship and working with each other.
3. Describe how nurturing relationships can protect children and adults from the risks associated with the stress of working with families living with a developmental disability and/or in concentrated poverty.
4. Understand the basic principles of building positive relationships with families.
5. Understand how to use nurturing-helping relationships with families to support the parent-child relationship.
6. Understand the importance of nurturing-helping relationships at every level of program operation, especially reflective practice.
