Collective Wisdom: Community Strength
The Pasadena/Altadena Coalition of Transformative Leaders, along with the Mario Project and dozens of parents, youth and service professionals from our community are sponsoring a multicultural and multilingual summit designed to: (1) re-energize parents by encouraging appropriate and responsive civic action, and use of existing community resources; (2) connect parents, youth, professionals and community leaders to find transformative and sustainable solutions to our most pressing challenges; and (3) empower youth to speak their truth and be heard as experts of their experience.
This one-day event is a key component of a larger transformational movement in Pasadena/Altadena to build a community where residents from diverse cultural perspectives work collaboratively. Participants will reweave the social fabric that sustains them despite diminishing public services, social supports and neighborhood safety, so that they can better contribute to the solution and break the cycle of dependence.
Your attendance will make a major difference in your life, the lives of your family members and the civic life in Pasadena/Altadena. Specifically:
Parents will come away with confidence and:
- Connection to other parents committed to strong and loving families,
- Increased skills, tools and strength to sustain a highly effective family life,
- Increased listening skills for improved dialogue with youth,
- Greater understanding and respect for the strengths of their children and youth, including the hi-tech manner in which youth communicate, learn and interact socially,
- Greater understanding and trust for what service professionals contribute,
- Increased ability to access professional help when needed,
- Greater understanding of how to assert themselves as leaders of transformation and public policy.
Youth will come away with:
- Confidence in speaking with parents and professionals in a respectful environment,
- Appreciation for what they have learned through schooling and an appreciation of that which they still need to learn to be successful adults,
- Understanding and guidance on necessary steps toward financial independence through employment and entrepreneurship,
- Faith in a future where peace, love and strong social bonds are the cultural norm.
Professionals will come away with:
- Understanding techniques for partnering with families to meet their professional goals,
- Enhanced skills for accessing neighborhood resources,
- Enhance learning to engage parents to address the challenges that are threatening their lives,
- Recognition of their value within the community.
In addition to dozens of workshops, this summit and celebration will offer unique opportunities to have fun through arts and games designed to make participants think about and experience the power of community to support family life and mobilize to affect social change.
