Bright Beginnings Conference: Maternal Mental Health Over The Life Course

March 15, 2010
Mental illness in women during pregnancy, post partum and the interpartum years threatens the well-being of mothers and their children. Evidence indicates that maternal mental illness increases the risk of maternal morbidity during labor and delivery, and of adverse birth outcomes such as preterm birth and low birth weight. Post partum depression and mood disorders also threaten the infant's cognitive and emotional development. The negative effects on the infants have typically been assumed to derive from the early interactions with their depressed mothers.

During this conference, we will:

  • Discuss the knowledge and implications of the Life Course model with respect to maternal mental health and its application in the delivery of services;
  • Explore the best practices for screening and treatment of mental health problems for vulnerable populations including: low income women, adolescents, culturally diverse populations and other parenting partners during pregnancy, postpartum and interconception;
  • Examine the role of the primary care team in delivering medical and psychosocial care for maternal mental health issues through a case scenario; and
  • Examine alternative therapeutic models of care for maternal depression and co-morbidities including diabetes, chronic pain and hypertension.

CMEs will be offered for nurses and physicians.
