Babies in Crisis: The Anna Freud Centre Model of Psychoanalytic Parent-Infant Psychotherapy with Earliest Attachment Disorders

The Reiss-Davis Child Study Center presents Babies in Crisis: The Anna Freud Centre Model of Psychoanalytic Parent-Infant Psychotherapy with Earliest Attachment Disorders. Presented by Tessa Baradon, Head of the Infancy, Toddlerhood and Preschool Programme at the Anna Freud Centre, London.

This is the inaugural presentation of Saturdays at the Center, the Reiss-Davis Child Study Center's new annual series of continuing education programs for mental health professionals serving children, adolescents and families.

CONTENT WILL INCLUDE:

1. Normal development and early attachment relationship:

  • Emotional and behavioral aspects of ordinary ("normative") early attachment between infant and adult.
  • Examples of normal mother/infant interaction (the "dance" between the parent and infant) during early development.

2.  Early relational trauma:

  • The primary relationship with the parent as a source of trauma for the baby.
  • Behavioral and emotional manifestations of the early relational trauma during ordinary ongoing interactions such as feeding and changing.
  • The development of precocious defenses against "unthinkable anxiety" in the baby as a consequence of the early relational trauma.

3. Case Illustration :

  • Case material from infant-parent psychotherapy with a mother and baby will be used to illustrate intergenerational trauma in the earliest relationship.
  •  The practice of mother/infant treatment as a modality of psychotherapy with young children.
