First 5 LA recognizes that to successfully implement our new strategic plan the workforce that touch families of children prenatal through 5 will need the skills and support to carry out our vision. This is why, in conjunction with other countywide strategies, we will focus on strengthening the qualifications of child focused service providers in the fields of physical health, mental health, early care and education, child welfare/social services, and early intervention, through a workforce development strategy. We plan to build on our current investments, such as Best Start LA and Los Angeles Universal Preschool, leveraging what those efforts have already accomplished. Best Start LA's Workforce Development Project for example, has worked toward identifying a set of core competencies for prenatal through 3 service providers in L.A. County. Click here to learn more about this effort. By supporting key sectors that interact with families of children 0-5, we hope to build the capacity of the overall workforce to flexibly meet the needs of families and move the county toward the new strategic plans four goal areas: babies are born healthy, children maintain a healthy weight, children are safe from abuse and neglect, and children are ready for kindergarten.
