Daniel Su is the database administrator for First 5 LA, helping keep the organizations computer systems running smoothly. Supporting the knowledge management of the organization, he maintains and trains staff on database systems. While Daniel’s work does not directly influence the lives of children and families in Los Angeles County, First 5 LA staff heavily relies on his technological abilities.

Born in Taiwan, Daniel grew up in the city of Changhua, best known for a 26-foot-tall statue of Buddha that oversees the city. At the age of 15, and because of his natural talent for swimming, the Taiwanese government sent Daniel to the United States to train for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. He left his father and brother in Taiwan for Concord, California, where he attended College Park High School and trained with two other Taiwanese government-sponsored students.

While Daniel did not ultimately get to compete in the Olympics, he decided to stay in this country and attend Pepperdine University. Daniel continued to competitively swim in college and graduated with bachelor’s degree in journalism and advertising. He stayed at Pepperdine one more year after graduating to coach the women’s swim team. After coaching, he took a position as an account executive at Muse, Codero & Chen, an advertising agency in Los Angeles.

Daniel left his position as an account executive after a short year to join the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles (now called LA84), an organization created with surplus funds from the ‘84 Olympic Games, as a program officer. He served in this position for 13 years, overseeing programs such as the Run 4 Fun! which introduced L.A. County middle school students to distance running; and Summer Swim, offering instruction on the basics of swimming, diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming.

Daniel joined First 5 LA in 2002, providing technical support ever since. He lives in Santa Monica with Jennifer, his wife of 12 years. Both passionate about world travel, the couple has visited Peru, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France, Thailand and other countries. Daniel remains friends with the two Taiwanese government-sponsored students that he trained with when he first came to the U.S. Click below to hear our interview with Daniel.
