Bill Gould has been an employee at First 5 LA for more than six years. Initially starting in the Planning and Development department, he quickly moved to the Research and Evaluation Department and has worked on projects including Family Literacy, Partnerships for Families and the School Readiness initiative. He is also involved in contributing to the evaluation of DCFS' Prevention Initiative. Born in Washington D.C., Bill has lived and traveled throughout the world. He has lived in New York, Detroit, Boston, England, Japan, Zimbabwe, Germany, and now resides in Altadena. Bill's interest in social service and children were shaped by personal experience. His father, William Gould IV, is an author and legal scholar who was appointed as Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board in the Clinton Administration. He was also the first African American law professor tenured at Stanford University. As an undergraduate at Occidental College, Bill worked at Rosemary's Children's Center in Pasadena, one of the oldest West Coast charities that help children who have suffered abuse, neglect and abandonment. He spent his junior year working in a group home in Hawaii where most of the kids were Samoan and indigenous Hawaiians. After graduating from with his degree in sociology, Bill lived and worked for three months in Zimbabwe through a program called "Crossroads to Africa." Bill has a graduate degree in social work from UCLA, and has worked for Florence Crittenton Center, United Way, the Community College Foundation, and the Children's Bureau. Prior to coming to First 5 LA, Bill was a director of programs at CASEY Family Programs, whose mission is to improve and ultimately prevent the need for foster care. A newlywed and proud father of a 2 year-old girl, Bill spends his free time playing basketball, working on genealogy, or salsa dancing.
