Senate Ramps Up For More Budget HearingsMarch 8, 2010 |
Printer-friendly version |
The next phase in California's fiscal crisis begins this week, as the state Senate embarks on a series of budget hearings that are slated to last until mid-May. During this time, legislators are expected to deliberate on a number of the Governor's budget proposals that were not included in the special session budget hearings, as well as those that legislators heard and opted not to include in the package of mid-year budget solutions. These include the proposed redirection of First 5 funding from local children's programs; cuts to Healthy Families; COLA decreases for child development programs; and reductions in Stage 2 and Stage 3 CalWORKS. Detailed agendas for the hearings are not yet available, although budget issues under the Department of Social Services are slated for April 22, while Department of Developmental Services issues are heard on April 29. The schedule also includes two hearings (on May 6 and 13) that are designated as "open issues." The full schedule of Senate hearings can be found here. The announcement of the State Assembly's budget hearing schedule is expected soon.
We encourage everyone to continue contacting legislators about the importance of First 5 funding to programs that provide health insurance coverage, offer early education, and prevent child abuse and maltreatment. For more information on what you can do, please visit the First 5 Association site. ‹‹Back to this week's Monday Morning Report
