MEDIA ADVISORY---The First 5 LA Commission today voted to re-allocate $10 million to CalWORKS Stage 3 child care providers in Los Angeles County to cover payments for February and March.

The commission's action re-allocates previously approved but unused funds that the state budget would not have covered for those months. Assembly Speaker John Perez (D- Los Angeles) has already introduced legislation that is expected to restore state funding to CalWORKs Stage 3 and Gov. Jerry Brown's budget proposal includes CalWORKS Stage 3 child care funding starting in April.

In late October, First 5 LA approved transitional funding to restore the CalWORKs child care program in response to the elimination of child care for nearly 7,000 children in L.A. County whose parents have successfully moved off welfare.

The Commission acted earlier to avert a local child care crisis triggered by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto of $256 million from the "welfare-to-work" program.
