As part of child literacy month, First 5 LA is partnering with local nonprofit Families in Schools to promote local school and agency participation in this year's Million Word Challenge (MWC). The MWC is a literacy initiative challenging Los Angeles County children, Pre-K through 12th Grade, to read millions of words outside of school time. The contest culminates in one student per school or agency being chosen as that entity's winner. Each winner receives a $50 gift certificate to purchase books at the Feria del Libro: A Family Book Fair. To register your school or agency, click here or go to www.millionwordchallenge.org. Registration opened Nov. 1 and will close Dec. 15, but please note that space is limited. After registering, school staff have access to an on-line campaign handbook containing activities and handouts that support creative literacy events at their sites. The MWC kick-off will be held Nov. 19 at a local elementary school. A live Web cast that classrooms and administrators can tune into will enable schools to participate. For more information regarding the Web cast, visit www.millionwordchallenge.org/live/launchevent.html. First 5 LA hopes that all eligible L.A. County organizations joins with Families in Schools and all of the sponsoring agencies by participating in the Million Word Challenge. |
