The Preschool Experiences We Deserve, a colorful and easy-to-read, eight-page publication is now available for free to all L.A. County families. Produced by Families in Schools, a non-profit organization in partnership with the Los Angeles Preschool Advocacy Coalition and funded by the California Community Foundation (CCF), the publication contains comprehensive recommendations about how parents can help facilitate the best preschool education possible for their child 0-5.

"We worked with many organizations and got input from several families on how to structure what went into the publication," said Joe Carcedo, executive director of Families in Schools. "We came up with a three-tiered approach: 1) to reinforce the importance of early learning 2) give families the tools to identify a quality program in their area, and 3) if there were no available programs, how to connect with elected officials to bring in quality programs to the area."

The document challenges parents to think about preschool options for their children and lists five things a family can do:

  • Seek quality early care and preschool education experiences for your own children.
  • Learn how to identify quality programs so you can determine if your child is receiving this type of educational experience.
  • Engage in conversations with other parents of young children about the urgency of quality early care and preschool programs for their children.
  • Join a local coalition or parent association or organize one through your network of friends to advocate for a quality preschool experience for all children.
  • Contact decision makers through letters or by visiting their offices to let them know L.A. needs more facilities and quality programs for its young children. Elected officials use information they hear from people like you to decide how to vote.

Currently being distributed by CCF, the publication also includes resource numbers for families, statistics on dropout rates in L.A. County and a list of coalition members. CCF is known as one of L.A.'s most innovative investors in permanent, low-income housing; the biggest supporter of individual artists in the region; and a national leader in increasing services for returning vets from Iraq and Afghanistan.
