What makes a high-impact nonprofit? Last month nonprofit leaders gathered at the California Endowment to learn from Heather McLeod Grant, co-author of "Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits," that becoming a great nonprofit doesn't necessarily require large budgets, snazzy marketing or perfect management. Through years of research the co-author learned that high-impact nonprofits work creatively within and through other organizations and individuals to create more success than they could have ever achieved alone.

Presented by First 5 LA, workshop co-sponsors included the Social Enterprise Institute, Executive Consulting for the Nonprofit Sector, the Fieldstone Foundation and the Executive Service Corps of Southern California. Attendees gained insight and direction through the powerful context of author McLeod Grant's examples and expertise around the six practices of high-impact nonprofits: "advocate and serve", "make markets work", "inspire evangelists or champions of your organization", "nurture nonprofit networks", "master the art of adaptation", and "share leadership".

First 5 LA shared this learning opportunity with grantees and local child-oriented nonprofits as part of its formal expansion of organizational capacity building programs. With the success of several pilot projects over the past two years, First 5 LA is now implementing a series of programs designed to support current and former grantees with organizational capacity building, sustainability planning and leadership development. New programs will begin this summer and in the fall.
