California's statewide energy efficiency campaign — Flex Your Power — recently recognized Mother's Club Family Learning Center of Pasadena with an award for its outstanding leadership in energy efficiency. In 2007, the First 5 LA grantee renovated its building to be energy efficient, reducing energy use by 52 percent and saving 122,110 gallons of water annually. The 6th Annual Flex Your Power Awards Ceremony was held on December 15th in San Francisco. A total of five best overall winners were selected from several hundred applicants for their exceptional contributions to energy efficiency in California. Award winners over the last three years have saved more than $500 million and 3 billion kilowatt hours. They have also reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing more than 230,000 cars from the road. Last month, Mother's Club became Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified by the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Green Building Rating System, a national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. The center has received a total of nine awards since opening in October 2007. Founded in 1961, Mother's Club Family Learning Center prepares families living in isolation and poverty to succeed in school and life through two-generation learning programs. Mother's Club services offer high quality, research-based early childhood education for children ages 0-5 and a comprehensive adult program. This program includes parenting education, leadership training, adult literacy, vocational exploration, group counseling and social networking for the primary caretaker, most often the mother.
