In addition to the month of November's designation as Child Literacy Month by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, November 1st marked National Family Literacy Day. This year, the First 5 LA-funded Long Beach Family Literacy program celebrated the nationally recognized holiday by showering local families with free books. In partnership with McDonald's and the National Center for Family Literacy, more than 125 people filled a McDonald’s restaurant in Signal Hill on November 1st to get free books and bookmarks, as well as special treats and surprises. Also joining in the celebration were families from the Cambodian Association of America’s family literacy program. Children enjoyed special guest readers such as Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, who did a rousing rendition of Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham; Signal Hill Mayor Tina Hansen; and representatives from the offices of other public officials. "Families left McDonald's ... knowing that their community cares about them," Program Director Roberta Lanterman said. "They took home books for their children, and took home lots of information to help them help their children get ready to read. It's about us helping our families – it's what we do best."
