This fall was a busy season for First 5 LA, especially in the month of October. Reaching more than 18,000 professionals and community members, First 5 LA staff held booths at several events throughout the county to educate participants about our programs and services, and, in November, promote our Read Early, Read Aloud! campaign. Here are just a few of the events: The Help Group Summit On October 2, more than 800 doctors, researchers, families and other professionals working in the field of childhood neurological development gathered at the Skirball Cultural Center for The Help Group's 2009 Summit on Autism, Learning Disabilities and ADHD. The primary focus of the summit was on early identification and early intervention in the areas of autism, learning disabilities and ADHD. First 5 LA helped sponsor the event and held a booth to educate conference attendees about our programs and services. LAUP's Universal Preschool Conference & Education Expo Approximately 1,500 parents and preschool educators, administrators and staff attended LAUP's Universal Preschool Conference & Education Expo on Oct. 16-17 to celebrate and advance the cause of early childhood education. The event, co-hosted by First 5 LA, Preschool California and Pre-K Now, offered information related to preschool education through educational workshops, seminars and exhibits, focusing exclusively on the impact of early education.ICAN Nexus XIV: Violence Within the Home and its Effects on Children Now in its 14th year, this event hosted more than 800 professionals, volunteers and community-based representatives and focused on preventing child abuse and neglect. Held at the Sheraton Universal Hotel right next to Universal Studios, the event featured speaker Dr. Harvey Karp, author of "The Happiest Baby on the Block," and a panel of media experts for a discussion titled "An Inside Look into the Media." The Women's Conference The Women's Conference, hosted by California First Lady Maria Shriver and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, is the largest and most dynamic gathering of women in the nation. Held at the Long Beach Convention Center, the annual Conference unites more than 80 internationally-acclaimed leaders, visionaries and authors with more than 14,000 women to share enriching stories of transformation and success, self-empowerment and life lessons. First 5 LA and First 5 California had side by side booths to reach the many parents and professionals in attendance. Read Early, Read Aloud! Red Carpet Affair For our third annual child literacy month campaign, "Read Early, Read Aloud!" First 5 LA promoted early literacy and library card registration throughout the month of November. Kicking-off the campaign, we hosted a "Red Carpet Affair" at the Julian Dixon Library on Nov. 5, providing top hats and boas to more than 100 children who strode down a red carpet to the library, where they engaged in a variety of literacy activities. Festival of Readers On Nov. 7, First 5 LA staff joined nonprofit Friends of the Family for the sixth annual Festival of Readers. Held at Maclay Middle School in Pacoima, the festival welcomed some 700 participants from all over the San Fernando Valley. With a focus on the joys of reading, the festival also offered crafts and entertainment including the group "We Tell Stories" and popular children's signer Jose Luis Oroszco. Promatoras Conference More than 600 promotoras, or community health workers, gathered at the Burbank Marriott Hotel on December 4-5 to exchange ideas and hear health experts at the seventh annual Visión y Compromiso conference, co-sponsored by First 5 LA. The conference featured nearly 30 workshops, two plenary sessions and a multitude of vendor booths offering health-related information. First 5 LA Senior Program Officer Conrado Bárzaga spoke at a conference plenary session on early childhood development. |
