Parks play an important role in physical fitness, family activity, and early learning experiences. Now you can get involved in a planning effort to shape the future of parks in the City of Angels.

The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks (RAP) is currently conducting a "Citywide Community Needs Assessment" in order to plan for L.A.'s parks for the next several years. RAP intends to hold community input meetings in each City Council District and would like to hear from as many community members as possible. The public forums will have Spanish translators on hand, and some sessions will provide child care (older youth are encouraged to participate in the meeting). Those unable to attend a community meeting may fill out an online survey assessing parks (see link below). The survey is available in English and Spanish.

Getting involved in local issues, like your local parks, is an easy way to begin advocating for the needs of your community. For example, your community might need handicap-accessible playground equipment, healthy cooking classes, a community garden, or more lighting to improve safety. First 5 LA supports local advocacy on behalf of young children and their families, as well as improved facilities and programming at public parks.

The L.A. RAP community input meetings resume on January 7, 2008 and continue into February. For meeting locations and additional information on RAP’s Citywide Community Needs Assessment click here or contact Ms. Melinda Gejer at (213) 928-9136.
