| Recently, families from four of the First 5 LA-funded Rowland Unified School District Family Literacy programs participated in an art show at the Rowland Heights Library, which is a partner with the District and a continuous supporter of the Family Literacy programs. The overall theme was "The Celebration of Spring," and each site completed one or two art projects focusing on a specific sub-theme. The Northam Elementary site chose farming and growing, the La Seda Elementary site chose sunflowers, the Hurley Elementary site did rainbows and colors, and the Farjardo Elementary site selected butterflies Beginning with a brief viewing of the artwork, families later enjoyed a story-telling and sing-a-long session lead by the children's librarian, Jeff Jarrett. Afterwards, teachers gave brief presentations of their site's projects. The morning ended with the children exploring books and parents admiring the artwork, which was displayed in the library until the end of April. Here is a brief description of what the teachers shared. - Northam Elementary: Farming and Growing
The first project for this program was apple tree paintings made with the children's forearms, handprints and fingertips. Learning about their own family tree was the second project. Children drew pictures of their entire family while ECE teacher Liza Castro tied in an overall theme of how plants and people grow . - Hurley Elementary: Rainbows and Colors
Hurley's first project was a painted hand print using colors from the rainbow. The second was painting rainbows and gluing them on different textured materials using the same colors of the rainbow. The ECE teacher explained how this art project encouraged knowledge and recognition of colors, especially for the very young children in her class. - La Seda Elementary: Sunflowers
This site both painted and drew sunflowers. The ECE teacher, Monica Jarvis, explained that she brought in real sunflowers to expose the class to the different textures. She also introduced the children to the sunflower paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. - Farjardo Elementary: Butterflies
This site's first project was a diorama of the entire butterfly matrix. Every stage of a butterfly's development was reflected on each child's diorama. The second project was a butterfly cut out decorated by the children with colored tissue paper and pipe cleaners for antennas. As ECE teacher Sophia Haideri presented, the children told the audience about each stage of the butterfly matrix.
