Family involvement is the name of the game at the Rowland Unified School District (RUSD), and recently receiving the Golden Bell Award for family engagement is the latest honor for their achievements. The prestigious award, issued by the California School Boards Association (CSBA), was given to RUSD for developing a successful family involvement curriculum while creating a personalized learning environment for parents and their children. The award was presented to the RUSD staff and partners this past Saturday at the CSBA Annual Conference at the San Diego Marriott & Marina.RUSD adopted the Community Based English Tutorial (CBET) family involvement program in 1999, and has implemented it in 13 of their 15 school sites. Developed by the California Department of Education, the goal of the CBET program is to provide English language instruction to non-English speaking parents so they can then tutor their children in English and become more involved partners in their children’s education. Four of the 13 CBET sites also have a First 5 LA-funded Family Literacy component, whose model falls in line with the CBET model of English learning for the whole family. The RUSD Family Literacy Program was recently honored by First 5 LA and the Los Angeles County Office of Education for having exemplary practices.
