All First 5 LA-funded Family Literacy programs include a time for parents and children to "learn through doing." Recently the Garfield Adult School Family Literacy program used that time to prepare for a spring celebration by making papier-mache Easter baskets and piñatas. For weeks, Parent Advisory Leader Olivia Gil supervised as the class created the decorative baskets and a bunny shaped piñata. The class also pitched in and planned a lunch celebration to take place at a nearby park, where the kids used their baskets for an Easter egg hunt and to collect candy from the piñata they broke open. First 5 LA was invited to join the celebration, where we interviewed parents about their experiences in the program. It was easy to see how much fun the children were having, but what was especially unique was the sense of community shared among the parents. The parents spoke to us about how their children benefitted from the program, and how it has better prepared them for Kindergarten. They also shared how participation has helped them personally, whether it be getting better at English, getting their high school diploma, or learning about computers. Parents interviewed are Anna Ochoa, who has been involved in the program since January, Mirna Velez, who has been involved since its beginning, and Graciela Casteneda, who has participated for two years. |
