By creating and supporting a range of initiatives and programs to encourage early learning and growth, First 5 LA demonstrates its dedication to serving the community through efforts that result in long-term change. Recently, First 5 LA furthered its commitment and investment in the community by adopting the agency's first public policy agenda.

Approved by the First 5 LA Commission on September 20, 2007, the agenda will guide the organization's policy and advocacy activities for the next 18 months. Entitled, "Strengthening Families and Communities," the agenda contains 22 items and is organized under three goal areas — early learning, health, and safe children and families. Tackling issues such as health care reform, early learning workforce development, and oral health and nutrition, the agenda allows the organization to be proactive in effecting change while also allowing the flexibility to respond to policy-related matters as they arise.

The public policy agenda was developed by First 5 LA's new Policy Department with input from First 5 LA Commissioners, the Prenatal through Three Policy Roundtable, L.A. County officials, foundations, grantees, policy and advocacy groups, and other stakeholders. It is informed by research, national trends, and the work of other First 5 commissions.
