Students and families at 92nd Street Elementary School got a celebrity treat while buying books and learning about early literacy at a recent book fair co-hosted by First 5 LA and Scholastic Books. Named by AOL's Film Fixation as one of the "10 Young African-American [Stars] to Watch," Khleo Thomas, who performed as "Zero" in the Disney Film "Holes," came out to support the health and growth of the children in this South Los Angeles neighborhood. Part of First 5 LA's Read Early, Read Aloud literacy campaign, more than 200 families attended the event which was emceed by campaign spokeswoman and Hot 92.3 radio DJ Josefa Salinas. Also welcoming families were Scholastic Book Fair representative Dillon Kalkhurst and First 5 LA community outreach representative Mayra Gomez. In addition to hearing stories and songs read and sung by Salinas, children received a canvas bag filled with healthy snacks, a free book and a literacy related growth chart from Reading is Fundamental and First 5 LA. They also received a Scholastic coupon for one free book redeemable at any L.A. County library. Click here to see pictures from this lively event. The Read Early, Read Aloud campaign is coming to a close, but click here if you are interested in participating in our last event emceed by Josefa Salinas titled "Literacy in the Home".
